Compounding

Bloomington Drug has been compounding for decades. Compounding is the art of customizing medications for each individual patient. From bio-identical hormones to flavoring the family pet's medication, we will do our best to meet every need. Compounded prescriptions are unique formulations for certain medications that require different strengths or different delivery routes.

Benefits of Compounded Medications:

• Ease of delivery: Medications can be compounded into many different forms such as creams or ointments, capsules, troches, and solutions. Flavoring is available to make you or your pet's medications more palatable. We are also able to combine multiple drugs into a single dosage.
• Sensitive Patients: We can compound medications without unnecessary additives such as dyes, sugars, and preservatives.
• Commercially Unavailable Medications: When medications are out of stock or discontinued, we can access the raw ingredients and compound a similar preparation.
• Customizable: We are able to compound medications in specific, commercially unavailable dosages to meet each patient’s individual needs, thus providing the most appropriate dosage with a reduced risk of side effects. We compound specialized and unique formulations that your physician has specifically developed to meet the needs of his/her patients.

Bio-identical hormones:

As we age, our bodies begin to change. Hormone levels begin to drop off. In women this is known as Menopause and in men it is called Andropause or male menopause. Also certain diseases or conditions may cause a hormone imbalance. As each person's needs are unique, the treatment should be compounded specifically to meet their individual needs. Bio-identical hormones are derived from plant based resources that match the natural occurring hormones in the body. We will work closely with your doctor to meet your individual needs. Pediatrics:

Children pose a unique challenge for every parent when it comes to getting their child to take a medication when they are sick. They may resist having to take a medication, dislike the taste or texture, or have difficulty swallowing solid dosage forms. Our compounding pharmacists have the experience and know how to either re-formulate a drug or make the drug from pure chemicals so that the right dosage form, strength, and flavor make the medication palatable to your child.

Dermatology:

Skin conditions can not only cause physical discomfort but also personal embarrassment to those who suffer them.  We work closely with dermatologists to prepart both curative and cosmetic medications in a wide variety of formats to meet each individuals needs.

Pain Management:

Many commonly prescribed pain relief medications can cause stomach irritation and other unwanted side effects.  Compounding can provide alternate methods of delivery such as creams that can provide localized relief while bypassing the gastrointestinal system.

Veterinary:

We provide a variety of compounded medications for your family pet. Having trouble getting your pet to swallow a pill?  We can help by providing alternate methods of delivery such as solutions, creams, and chews. We can also flavor your pet's medication. Medications are provided in a variety of non-commercially available strengths and dosage forms.

Dental:

We provide compounded dental medications from anesthics to mouth rinses in a variety of flavors and strengths for both children and adults.
